Volkswagen Unveils ID. CROSS Concept, Ushering a New Era of Urban EVs at IAA MOBILITY 2025

This compact electric SUV promises to redefine urban mobility by blending style, practicality, and advanced technology—all while remaining accessible for the everyday driver.

ID. CROSS Concept

Under the banner “True Volkswagen,” the automaker showcased a refreshed lineup that bridges classic design cues with cutting-edge EV innovation. CEO Thomas Schäfer emphasizes the brand’s vision: “Our aim is to define the best version of Volkswagen ever. The ID. CROSS brings that vision to life—bold, intuitive, and equipped with technologies usually reserved for premium vehicles.”

A Compact SUV for the Modern City

The ID. CROSS Concept is crafted for urban life without compromise. Measuring 4,161 mm in length with a 2,601 mm wheelbase, it mirrors the footprint of Volkswagen’s T-Cross while offering a spacious, versatile interior. Inside, drivers and passengers are treated to a lounge-inspired cabin with earthy tones, natural motifs, and even live plants integrated into the floating center console. Clever storage solutions include 450 liters of rear cargo space and a 25-liter frunk, ensuring room for both daily errands and weekend getaways.

Front seats fold flat to create a reclining lounge, echoing Volkswagen’s legendary camper heritage. The cockpit combines an 11-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13-inch infotainment touchscreen, redesigned multifunction steering wheel, and natural voice recognition, prioritizing ease of use, safety, and comfort.

Next-Gen Performance on the MEB Platform

Built on an enhanced MEB architecture, the ID. CROSS is powered by a 155 kW (211 PS) front-wheel-drive electric motor, paired with a flat-pack high-voltage battery embedded in the floor. It promises a WLTP range of up to 420 km, a top speed of 175 km/h, and semi-autonomous features like Travel Assist, usually reserved for higher-end models.

For adventure seekers, the compact SUV accommodates a 75 kg tow bar load—enough for two e-bikes—and a maximum braked trailer weight of 1,200 kg, making it a rare blend of city-friendly dimensions and road-trip capability.

Volkswagen’s Broader EV Vision

The ID. CROSS is just one part of Volkswagen’s ambitious electrification strategy. Four all-new EVs for the small and compact segments are slated to roll out starting 2026, including the ID.2 all (ID. Polo), ID. Polo GTI, and ID. EVERY1, with the latter projected to start at just €20,000, signaling Volkswagen’s commitment to accessible e-mobility.

IAA MOBILITY 2025

Schäfer notes, “Through 2030, we aim to set the benchmark in high-volume tech leadership. At IAA 2025, we’re showing that the groundwork is already done.” This new portfolio blends electric innovation with refined combustion models, reflecting a future-ready mindset, unmatched versatility, and engineering precision.

Design That Connects

Clad in Urban Jungle Green, the ID. CROSS embodies Volkswagen’s Pure Positive design philosophy, emphasizing stability, likeability, and personality. From its expressive light signature to subtle nods at iconic models like the Golf and VW Bus, it’s crafted to stand out gracefully. 21-inch Balboa wheels and carefully considered proportions give the compact SUV a confident stance on any street.
