Kia is preparing to launch the all-electric Carens Clavis EV tomorrow in India, July 15. It will be the only electric MPV in its price segment when it launches – and it will come as a 7-seat exclusive. Ahead of the launch, here is a detailed preview of its design, cabin, features, powertrain, and anticipated price.
Key Highlights
- Anticipated with two battery pack alternatives – 51.4 kWh for a purported driving range of 490 km
- Official launch on July 15
- Service can be looked at every 12,000 km annually (whichever comes earlier)
- It will be the first electric MPV in its price range
- It is only available as a 7-seater
Exterior Design: Familiar Yet Electric
Design-wise, the Carens Clavis EV has not been much changed from its internal combustion engine (ICE) sibling, the regular Carens. But to denote its electrified nature, the model brings a few exclusive touches.
Up front, the charging port is housed in a sealed-off grille and gives that distinctly EV look to the front of the car. The rear retains the connected LED light bar – a design feature carried over from the fossil fuel version.
Look out for special aero alloys and subtly modified bumpers, injecting a little more individuality. Despite these changes, the silhouette looks like a Carens but combines the familiarity with an EV look.
Cabin and Interior: Quiet Improvement, Sensible Additions
Get inside, and the dashboard design closely resembles the one seen on the ICE version. However, the instrument cluster and infotainment displays will have EV-specific graphics, providing it with a futuristic feel.
Kia is also rumoured to redesign the lower centre console for more storage. Up front, dual 12.3-inch screens take centre stage and a two-spoke steering wheel that looks like it was inspired by the Kia Syros and Clavis designs we saw earlier.
Inside, the cabin gets a slick black-and-white, dual-tone treatment, and a retractable-lid storage compartment between the front seats brings some practical style.
Features & Tech: Chock-Full of Smart Conveniences
The Carens Clavis EV is tipped to be loaded with premium tech and safety gear. Key highlights include:
- Powered and ventilated driver’s seat
- Wireless phone charging for front and rear passengers
- Rear AC vents
- Dual-zone automatic climate control
- Panoramic sunroof
- Auto-dimming IRVM
In terms of safety, you’re probably going to get:
- Six airbags as standard
- Front and rear parking sensors
- Tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)
- An expected 360-degree camera and blind spot detection
- Level 2 ADAS, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, driver fatigue detection and autonomous emergency braking system
Powertrain and Range: Two Battery Packs, Good Figures
The EV will have a 51.4 kWh battery pack with 490 km (MIDC) of range. The base versions of the car may also be available with a cheaper, 42 kWh battery pack – an option for those who are budget-conscious and which is expected to give the vehicle a range of around 370 km.
Details about the electric motor are scarce, although we expect a front-wheel-drive system capable of producing somewhere between 135 and 170 PS.
Expected Price & Market Rivals
Pricing is expected to commence from ₹18 lakh (ex-showroom). It won’t have a direct competitor, but it does provide a 7-seater electric option in contrast to other models such as:
- Tata Curvv EV
- MG ZS EV
- Hyundai Creta EV
- Mahindra BE.6
- The upcoming Maruti e-Vitara
