Remember when the Tesla Model S first showed up back in 2013? Tesla’s sleek sedan changed how we thought about electric cars—fast, stylish, and nothing like the quirky EVs that came before it. But let’s be honest, even the coolest cars start showing their age eventually.
Sure, Tesla has tweaked things here and there over the years, but the Model S still feels like… well, a Tesla Model S. That might be about to change, though.
In a recent podcast appearance, Tesla’s VP of Engineering Lars Moravy dropped some interesting hints. Both the Tesla Model S and the Model X SUV are due for a serious refresh before the end of 2025.
Quick Stats on the Tesla Model S (2024)
- Starts at $74,990
- All-wheel drive electric powertrain
- Packs between 670-1,020 horsepower
- Can hit 60 MPH in 1.99 seconds
- Top speeds range from 130-200 mph

Following the Rest of the Family
If you’ve been watching Tesla lately, you’ve probably noticed they’ve been busy updating their cheaper cars first. The Model 3 got the “Highland” treatment, and the Model Y received its “Juniper” update.
Now, it looks like the flagship vehicles are finally getting some love.
Speaking on the “Ride The Lightning” podcast, Moravy acknowledged that while the 2021 refresh (remember that weird yoke steering wheel?) brought some changes, there’s plenty more to do. Many of the improvements we’ve seen in the updated Model 3 and Y might be heading to Tesla’s premium cars.
What might we see? Details are thin, but educated guesses include:
- Better driver assistance tech (possibly using newer Autopilot hardware)
- Nicer interior materials that actually feel premium
- A quieter ride with improved sound insulation
- Updated electrical systems to boost efficiency and cut production costs
The 800-Volt Question
Here’s what I’m really curious about: Will Tesla finally bump the Model S up to an 800-volt system like the one in the Cybertruck? Right now, the Tesla Model S and X use a 450-volt setup, which limits how fast they can charge compared to some newer rivals. Jumping to 800 volts could mean significantly faster pit stops.
Then there’s the battery size debate. Tesla has typically focused on efficiency rather than just cramming in bigger batteries. However, with companies like Lucid pushing range numbers higher and higher, Tesla might need to rethink this approach if they want the Model S to keep its long-range crown.
What’s on your wish list?
The Tesla Model S has been the gold standard for luxury EVs for years, but the competition isn’t messing around anymore. What would make you consider trading up to a refreshed Model S? A totally reimagined interior? Lightning-fast charging? Next-level driver assistance?
