After years of cautiously navigating the electric vehicle transition, Lexus is finally making a decisive move into one of the industry’s fastest-growing categories. The Japanese luxury marque has officially unveiled the all-new 2027 Lexus TZ, a fully electric three-row SUV designed to blend premium comfort, futuristic styling, and family-focused practicality into one ambitious package.
The reveal marks a pivotal moment not only for Lexus, but also for parent company Toyota, which has often faced criticism for moving slower than rivals in the battery-electric race. Now, with the TZ, Lexus appears ready to compete directly against heavyweight electric SUVs like the Hyundai IONIQ 9, Volvo EX90, Rivian R1S, and Lucid Gravity.
And unlike some of Toyota’s earlier EV efforts, this one feels deliberately upscale from the very beginning.
Lexus Enters the Premium Three-Row EV Segment
Officially introduced at Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, the Lexus TZ becomes the first three-row EV ever developed under the Lexus nameplate. Toyota says the SUV is aimed at buyers who want spacious utility without sacrificing refinement, silence, or luxury craftsmanship.
The Lexus TZ shares its platform architecture with the upcoming Toyota Highlander EV and Subaru’s future electric SUV programs, but Lexus has clearly pushed the design and cabin experience into far more premium territory.
Globally, the SUV is expected to launch first in Japan this winter before expanding into North America, Europe, and China near the end of 2026.
A Futuristic Exterior With Sharp, Concept-Car Energy
Visually, the 2027 Lexus TZ avoids the conservative styling often associated with large family SUVs. Instead, Lexus has gone with a dramatic, angular design language that almost resembles science-fiction armor.
The front fascia features deeply sculpted body panels, layered surfaces, and sharp geometric detailing that create an aggressive yet sophisticated appearance. From certain angles, the SUV carries an almost cinematic presence, with styling cues reminiscent of futuristic armored suits.
Dimensionally, the Lexus TZ stretches roughly 200.8 inches in length while riding on a substantial 120.1-inch wheelbase. The proportions place it directly alongside major rivals in the premium electric SUV segment, though Lexus has intentionally given the roofline a slightly sleeker profile to avoid the boxy look common among three-row crossovers.
Buyers will also have access to 11 exterior paint colors, giving the model broader personalization potential than many competitors currently offer.
Lexus Focuses Heavily on Quietness and Comfort
If there’s one area Lexus engineers seem particularly proud of, it’s cabin serenity.
According to company executives, the Lexus TZ was developed around the idea of creating one of the quietest SUV interiors Lexus has ever produced. Extensive sound insulation, a rigid body structure, revised suspension tuning, and the inherently silent nature of an EV powertrain all contribute to the experience.
Inside, the cabin follows what Lexus calls its “Driving Lounge” philosophy. Rather than emphasizing flashy technology alone, the interior focuses on relaxation and long-distance comfort.
The SUV arrives with a six-seat layout featuring second-row captain’s chairs, while heated and ventilated seating extends beyond the front row. Lexus even includes power ottomans for select passenger seats — a rare luxury touch in this category.
Practicality remains important too. Both the second and third-row seats can fold flat electronically with a single button press, making cargo expansion significantly easier.
Technology Gets a Major Upgrade
The TZ also introduces one of Lexus’ most advanced infotainment systems to date.
The latest Lexus Interface software includes customizable widgets, integrated navigation within the digital instrument cluster, EV-specific route planning tools, and enhanced range mapping capabilities. Voice interaction has also evolved through an updated “Hey Lexus” assistant.
Music lovers may gravitate toward the available 21-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system, which Lexus claims delivers a concert-like listening experience throughout the cabin.
Interestingly, Lexus borrowed inspiration from enthusiast-oriented EVs by adding artificial driving sounds and simulated gear-shift sensations. Drivers can even activate an audio profile inspired by the legendary Lexus LFA V10 soundtrack, injecting a sense of drama into an otherwise whisper-quiet electric SUV.
Dual-Motor AWD and Up to 300 Miles of Range
At launch, Lexus TZ will be offered exclusively with dual-motor all-wheel drive. The brand’s DIRECT4 torque-vectoring system comes standard, continuously adjusting power delivery between the axles to improve handling stability and traction.
Power output is expected to land between 402 and 420 horsepower depending on market specification.
Two battery configurations will be available:
- 76.96-kWh standard battery
- 95.82-kWh extended-range battery
Lexus estimates the larger battery pack can deliver approximately 300 miles of driving range in North American specification, while Japanese testing figures suggest a cruising range near 620 kilometers.
Charging speeds, however, remain relatively conservative compared with some newer EV architectures. DC fast charging peaks at 150 kW, allowing the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in roughly 35 minutes.
North American versions of the Lexus TZ will also adopt the NACS charging connector, granting access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network.
Safety and Driving Assistance
The SUV comes equipped with Lexus Safety System 4.0 as standard equipment. The package bundles advanced driver-assistance technologies including:
- Lane Change Assist
- Front Pre-Collision System
- Pedestrian Detection
- Emergency Steering Assist
- Adaptive driving aids for highway cruising
While the system stops short of fully autonomous driving capability, Lexus says the goal is to reduce fatigue and improve long-distance travel comfort.
One Missing Feature Could Frustrate Some Buyers
Despite its long list of luxury and technology features, the Lexus TZ does omit one increasingly common EV convenience: a front trunk.
Photos released during the reveal show unused space beneath the hood, yet Lexus chose not to integrate a functional frunk storage compartment. In a segment where buyers increasingly expect every inch of packaging efficiency, the absence stands out more than expected.
Some industry observers speculate Lexus could eventually introduce a frunk solution in future trims or model-year updates, though the company has not confirmed any such plans.
Lexus Finally Signals Serious EV Intentions
The arrival of the Lexus TZ represents more than just another luxury SUV launch. It signals a broader philosophical shift for Toyota and Lexus as both brands accelerate deeper into the fully electric market.
For years, Toyota prioritized hybrid technology while competitors aggressively expanded their EV lineups. Now, with a sophisticated three-row electric SUV carrying the Lexus badge, the company appears ready to challenge the premium EV establishment more directly.
Pricing remains unannounced, though expectations currently place the starting figure around $60,000 when the SUV reaches dealerships in late 2026.
Whether the Lexus TZ becomes a segment leader remains to be seen. Still, one thing is clear: Lexus is no longer treating electrification as a side project.
