The European Toyota bZ4X is getting some serious upgrades, and there’s a good chance we’ll see them in the U.S., too. The biggest news? A massive power boost. The all-wheel-drive version now pumps 337 horsepower—way more than the measly 215 hp in the current U.S. model.
Toyota didn’t stop at just adding muscle. They’ve also improved home charging speeds and played around with battery sizes. The standard battery pack shrank slightly while the larger one grew somewhat. The bZ4X didn’t exactly set the world on fire when it launched in 2023, but Toyota’s been quietly making it better. After adding new features last year, they slashed prices for 2025. Now, these European changes hint at even better things coming our way.

What’s under the hood?
Toyota upgraded the electric motors with fancy silicon carbide semiconductors that boost efficiency and power. The front-wheel-drive version now offers 164 or 211 hp depending on which battery you choose—up from the U.S. model’s 201 hp. But the real jaw-dropper is the AWD version with its 337 horses. That’s a huge leap from the current U.S. version’s 215 hp!
The battery options have changed, too. While U.S. models currently come with two almost identical packs (63.4 and 65.5 kWh), the European version widens the gap. The smaller pack now holds about 51.9 kWh, while the bigger one edges up to 65.8 kWh.
Charging gets a nice boost as well. The new 11-kW home charger blows past the pokey 6.6-kW unit in U.S. models, and there’s even an optional 22-kW charger for the truly impatient. Fast charging still tops out at 150 kW, but a new battery pre-conditioning system should help when it’s freezing outside.
Little tweaks make a big difference. The outside looks the same, but the inside is where things get interesting. The touchscreen grew to 14 inches (up from 12.3), and the center console now has two wireless charging pads. However, Toyota insists on that weird instrument placement that makes you peek over the steering wheel.
Toyota also claims they’ve improved how it drives and reduced cabin noise. Always nice.

So when do we get these goodies?
No word yet on when (or if) these changes will hit American shores. European buyers will see the updated model in showrooms within months.
The electric SUV market is getting crowded fast, and it looks like Toyota’s finally getting serious about making the bZ4X a contender. Now, we must wait and see how long these improvements take to cross the pond.
