Tesla is finally turning its attention to the big dogs: the Model S and Model X.
After a few quiet years, a Tesla exec casually confirmed that both flagship models are getting a refresh later this year. And honestly? It’s about time.
📉 S and X: Once Kings, Now Barely Hanging On
Let’s rewind a bit.
In 2021, Tesla gave the S and X a solid redesign. New internals, updated tech, and some fresh design tweaks. But… it didn’t exactly light the EV world on fire.

Tesla had hoped to sell 100,000 units a year between the two. But by last year? That target was slashed in half. And no, it’s not just because of newcomers like Lucid or Rivian stepping up. Even within Tesla’s own lineup, the Model 3 and Model Y are stealing all the spotlight—and the sales.
🔄 A Refresh is Coming (For Real This Time)
During a recent Ride the Lightning podcast, Lars Moravy, Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering, dropped this little gem:
“Just give it a minute. We’ll get there. The last upgrade was more substantial than most realized. We’ll give it some love later this year.”

Translation? A 2025 Tesla update for the Model S and X is officially in the pipeline. Details? Still under wraps. But if it’s anything like the recent Model 3 and Y refreshes, we could be in for some meaningful upgrades.
🤫 Tesla Usually Keeps Quiet—So Why Now?
Usually, Tesla plays it cool when it comes to upcoming changes. The company’s tight-lipped approach helps avoid what’s known as the Osborne effect—when buyers pause on current purchases because they’re waiting for the new stuff.
But here’s the thing: S and X sales are already way down. So, Tesla probably figures there’s not much to lose by teasing what’s next.
📊 How Bad Are Sales?
One Electrek commenter didn’t hold back. Here’s what Aigars Mahinovs had to say:
“Tesla sold only 1,000 units each of the S and X across all of Europe in 2024. Down from 10x that in 2020. This year? They’re barely moving 100 combined. That’s two cars a day—for the whole continent.”
Two. Cars. A day. That’s… rough.
🔍 So, What Might This Refresh Include?
Tesla hasn’t revealed anything official yet. But based on trends, rumors, and wish lists, here’s what could be coming in the 2025 Model S and Model X refresh:
- Better efficiency – because Lucid’s still outpacing them in range
- Turn signal stalk returns – it’s already made a comeback in the Model Y
- New lighting design – maybe a full-width lightbar?
- Interior changes – expect more innovative layouts and maybe more comfort-focused touches
- Updated tech – improved cameras, infotainment, possibly next-gen FSD hardware
Of course, Tesla could throw in a surprise or two. They’re good at that.
💬 What Do You Want to See?
Let’s be honest—these are still gorgeous cars. But they need some updates to stay in the game.
So, what’s on your wishlist?
- Better range?
- A more traditional interior?
- New design language altogether?
