Tata’s dream EV might take longer to reach your garage. The Avinya, Tata Motors’ first purpose-built electric vehicle, faces fresh hurdles that could push its launch beyond what was planned.
What’s happening?
Tata originally wanted the Avinya on roads by December 2025. Then, they pushed it to some time in FY2026 (April 2025-March 2026). Now? It might slip even further past March 2026.
The culprit? A production shake-up with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
The failed partnership
Here’s the deal: The Avinya was meant to share JLR’s fancy new EMA platform, making it pricier than Tata’s current EVs (electrified versions of their gas cars).
To make the numbers work, Tata had a clever plan:
- Build over 70,000 EMA-based vehicles at their new Tamil Nadu plant
- About 25,000 would be Avinyas
- The rest would be JLR models
This would’ve spread out the manufacturing costs and kept prices somewhat reasonable.
But JLR backed out. They weren’t convinced they could get Indian-made EV parts that met their standards without blowing the budget. The cooling EV market globally didn’t help either.
Back to square one
Without JLR’s volume, Tata is left in a tight spot. The Avinya just got more expensive to build, forcing Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) to rethink everything.
Before this hiccup, Tata had big dreams: five different Avinya models, starting with a five-door Sportback based on their 2022 concept, followed by the Avinya X, and eventually a premium three-door SUV.
Now? Everything’s up in the air. Tata needs a new game plan to save the Avinya project. We’ll have to wait and see if this means a longer delay or a complete rethink of what these cars will be.
