Renault has officially named Josep Maria Recasens as the new Chief Executive Officer of Ampere, its dedicated electric vehicle (EV) division. Recasens, who currently serves as Renault’s Chief Operations Officer, will step into his new role on April 1, succeeding Group CEO Luca de Meo, who had been overseeing Ampere in addition to his broader responsibilities.
A Strategic Leadership Shift Amid Intensifying Competition
Renault’s decision to appoint Recasens reflects the company’s sharpened focus on scaling its EV operations in an increasingly competitive market. With the global automotive industry undergoing a rapid transformation, traditional automakers like Renault are striving to keep pace with emerging players and established rivals—particularly in the face of cost-effective EV offerings from Chinese manufacturers.
As European automakers grapple with shifting consumer demands and evolving regulatory landscapes, Ampere has been positioned as Renault’s spearhead for innovation and electrification. The company aims to drive down production costs, enhance battery efficiency, and expand its lineup of affordable EVs to maintain a competitive edge.
Josep Maria Recasens: A Leader with Deep Industry Expertise
Bringing years of operational expertise to his new role, Recasens has been instrumental in Renault’s broader transformation strategy. His tenure as Chief Operations Officer saw the company refine its supply chain, optimize production efficiencies, and bolster its transition toward sustainable mobility. His appointment signals a renewed commitment to accelerating the growth of Ampere, reinforcing Renault’s long-term vision for electrification.
In a statement, Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo expressed confidence in Recasens’ ability to steer Ampere toward new heights. “I know that with Josep Maria at the helm, Ampere will continue to thrive and successfully accelerate its role as a key pillar for Renault Group and the European EV industry,” de Meo remarked.
Renault’s Broader Vision for Ampere
The announcement comes during Renault’s investor day in Paris, where the automaker is expected to provide deeper insights into its EV strategy. With the European Union tightening emissions regulations and global EV adoption rising, Renault’s ability to scale Ampere efficiently will be crucial to its long-term success.
By placing a dedicated leader at the forefront of its EV unit, Renault signals its intent to expand its market share and drive meaningful advancements in electric mobility. As Recasens steps into his new role, all eyes will be on how Ampere navigates the evolving landscape and solidifies Renault’s position in the global EV race.
