Audi RS 5 Goes Electric — And It’s the Most Powerful One Yet

For the first time in its history, the performance arm of Audi has embraced plug-in hybrid technology for a full-fledged Audi RS 5 model. And it didn’t do it quietly.

The all-new Audi RS 5 arrives as a technological pivot point — electrified, yes, but unapologetically ferocious. If anything, the hybridization hasn’t diluted the formula. It has amplified it.

A Plug-In Hybrid With 639 PS and Zero Apologies

Under the bonnet sits a reworked 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6. Crucially, Audi resisted the industry’s obsession with downsizing. Instead, engineers refined the combustion engine using an optimized Miller cycle to improve efficiency without sacrificing its muscular character.

On its own, the V6 generates 375 kW (510 PS) and 600 Nm of torque.

Integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission is a powerful electric motor contributing up to 130 kW (around 177 PS) and 460 Nm. Combined system output? A formidable 470 kW — or 639 PS — alongside a towering 825 Nm of torque.

That translates into a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 3.6 seconds.

Add the optional performance package and top speed rises to 285 km/h. In pure electric mode, the Audi RS 5 can travel more than 80 kilometers — enough for many daily commutes without waking the V6 at all.

Silent when required. Savage when provoked.

The World’s First Rear Electromechanical Torque Vectoring System

Power is only half the story.

The new Audi RS 5 debuts a groundbreaking evolution of quattro all-wheel drive. Audi calls it Dynamic Torque Control — and it introduces the world’s first rear electromechanical torque vectoring system fitted to a production vehicle.

Unlike traditional mechanical systems, torque distribution at the rear axle is managed by an electric actuator. Adjustments happen in approximately 15 milliseconds. Practically instantaneous.

The center differential features preload, remaining partially locked even off throttle. Front-to-rear torque distribution can vary dynamically from 70:30 to 15:85. The effect is tangible: sharper turn-in, reduced understeer, and exceptional composure under aggressive throttle modulation.

In corners, it feels anticipatory. Almost predictive.

Wider, Lower, More Assertive

Visually, the Audi RS 5 makes no attempt at subtlety.

Compared to the standard A5, the body is widened significantly — nearly 9 centimeters across both axles in some measurements. Flared arches give it a planted, muscular silhouette whether in Sedan or Avant form.

Up front, a sculpted Singleframe grille with a three-dimensional honeycomb pattern commands attention. Functional air curtains channel airflow with precision. Dark Matrix LED headlights feature checkered-flag-inspired daytime running lights — a discreet homage to motorsport lineage.

At the rear, second-generation OLED tail lamps introduce a layered lighting signature. A pronounced diffuser frames oval RS tailpipes connected to a newly engineered sport exhaust with continuously variable valves.

It looks fast. Even standing still.

A Chassis Engineered for Precision

Beneath the surface, Audi Sport’s engineers reworked the chassis comprehensively.

The RS-specific front and rear axles pair with a sport suspension system featuring twin-valve dampers. These react in real time, minimizing pitch and roll while preserving ride compliance. Buyers can opt for 20- or 21-inch wheels wrapped in specially developed tires, with steel or ceramic brake systems available.

The balance is nuanced.

Supple over broken asphalt. Razor-edged through sweeping bends.

Digital Sophistication Inside

Step into the cabin and the performance ethos continues — though wrapped in digital refinement.

An 11.9-inch driver display adopts analog-inspired graphics, merging tradition with contemporary interface design. Honeycomb-stitched sport seats, perforated Nappa leather on the flat-bottom steering wheel, and dark metallic vanadium accents create a cockpit that feels purpose-built.

Every detail is deliberate.

Even the 12-o’clock steering marker reminds you this is an RS first and a hybrid second.

Production and Availability

Production will take place in Neckarsulm, Germany. European order books open in the first quarter of 2026, with first deliveries scheduled for summer 2026. Both Sedan and Avant variants will be offered from launch.

Electrified — But Unmistakably RS

The arrival of a plug-in hybrid in the RS lineup might have unsettled purists a few years ago. Yet this new Audi RS 5 makes a compelling argument.

Power has increased dramatically. Torque delivery is more immediate. Handling precision reaches new territory thanks to electrified torque vectoring.

And the V6? It’s still here. Still dominant. Still unmistakably Audi RS 5.

Electrification hasn’t softened Audi Sport’s identity. It has sharpened it.
