Step aside, Tesla and BYD; China’s auto crown just landed on a ride you probably didn’t see coming: the Geely Xingyuan.
Also called “Star Wish,” this sub-$10,000 city EV is flipping the script in the largest EV market on the planet.
So far, 2025 is serving up a plot twist none of us expected. Geely’s pint-sized EV, the Xingyuan, barreled straight to the top of the sales charts, leaving BYD’s Seagull and the Tesla Model Y—both long the darlings of driveways and newsfeeds—eating dust.
From January through June 2025, the Xingyuan racked up 205,000 sales and became not just the best-selling EV but the best-selling vehicle, period—gas, hybrid, or electric. Saying that’s impressive in China’s laser-competitive, innovation-hungry market is an understatement.
Value that Hits Wallets and Meets Wants
So what’s driving this rocket ride? Simple: a killer price that still delivers.
With a sticker of only 69,800 yuan (under $10,000), the Geely Xingyuan is the perfect play for budget-minded city drivers. But don’t think of it as a rusty bucket—inside the little crossover, you’ll find touchscreens, decent safety features, and enough room for city life.
People can pick between two LFP battery packs from CATL:
- 30.12 kWh pack: around 310 km (192 miles) on CLTC
- 40.16 kWh pack: about 410 km (255 miles) on CLTC
Lightweight and compact for those narrow city roads, this design really catches the eye.
Sales in the First Half: The New Scorecard
Here’s the leaderboard for Jan—June 2025:
Model | Units Sold (Jan–June) |
---|---|
Geely Xingyuan | 205,000 |
BYD Seagull | 174,912 |
Tesla Model Y | 171,491 |
Wuling Hongguang MINI EV | 171,046 |
BYD Qin PLUS | 163,603 |
Xiaomi SU7 | 155,000+ |
The Seagull, starting at $7,800, couldn’t dodge Geely’s momentum.
Xiaomi’s SU7, in sixth place and cruising past 20,000 a month, shows the brand’s EV debut wasn’t just talk, even with a few factory delays.
Hybrid Game Changer Incoming?
Buoyed by the Xingyuan’s success, Geely is already eyeing hybrids with the Galaxy A7. The “family sedan disruptor” offers:
- 1,300 miles total range (fuel + battery)
- 117.6 mpg, according to Geely’s calculations
Pre-orders are live, and the official launch happens on August 8.
A Change in What Drivers Want from EVs
The popularity of the Xingyuan shows something big is happening: more Chinese buyers want solid, affordable EVs instead of expensive imported models or luxury lines. This trend feels like an earthquake that could shake markets everywhere, especially since companies like Geely are getting ready to launch in other countries.
Tesla still shines at the high end, but Xiaomi, BYD, and now Geely are showing that what people really want is smart pricing, not just good looks.
