Chinese Automakers Dongfeng and Changan in Merger Talks

Dongfeng and Changan are deep in talks to join forces, according to The New York Times. These two car-making heavyweights might soon create a new Chinese auto champion that could shake up both domestic and global markets.

The merger talks seem serious. They’ve already told their foreign partners about the discussions, which is usually a sign that things are moving forward. Both companies answer to Beijing, which has been pushing for more prominent, stronger Chinese automakers.

The size difference between them is striking. Changan is worth about $15.7 billion on the market, while Dongfeng comes in at just $4.9 billion. This gap exists partly because Changan jumped ahead in electric vehicles and self-driving tech. At the same time, Dongfeng hasn’t adapted as quickly.

Why Beijing wants fewer, more prominent carmakers

For years, Chinese companies leaned on partnerships with foreign brands like Honda, Nissan, Ford, and Mazda. Now, the government wants homegrown champions who can stand on their own—especially in electric cars and innovative technology.

With trade fights heating up and new tariffs from America and Europe, China’s doubling down on building its own automotive powerhouse. A Dongfeng-Changan team-up fits this plan flawlessly, creating a stronger rival to both Chinese competitors like BYD and global names like Tesla.

What might change

If they merge, expect:

  • Combined resources for faster EV innovation
  • Stronger, more self-reliant supply chains
  • A rethink from foreign partners caught in the middle

Neither company has officially commented on timing, but insiders say the government will likely have the final say. This could be just the first domino, triggering more consolidation as China reshapes its auto industry around fewer but mightier players.
