BYD Atto 1 Arrives in Australia as Cheapest EV

BYD, a Chinese car company, is making waves in Australia by expanding its line of electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs). Starting in November 2025, the company will release the highly anticipated BYD Atto 1 and the flexible BYD Atto 2. In early 2026, it will also release the Sealion 5 and Sealion 8 SUVs. This planned rollout puts BYD in a good position to meet the needs of a wide range of Australian drivers, from city commuters to families with kids who want eco-friendly, high-tech cars.

BYD Atto 1: Australia’s New Standard for Cheap EVs

The BYD Atto 1 is getting a lot of attention because it will be Australia’s least expensive electric car. The Dolphin Surf in Europe and the Seagull in China are two names for this small city hatch. It promises to be a great mix of agility, efficiency, and modern design. Industry estimates say that the official price hasn’t been announced yet, but it could be less than $25,000, which would make owning an EV more affordable for more people.

The Atto 1 has a single front-mounted motor that can deliver between 55kW and 115kW, depending on the trim. The BYD Blade LFP battery, which is well-known, powers it. It has capacities from 30 kWh to 43.2 kWh and WLTP-rated ranges of 220 km to 322 km. It has a surprisingly roomy cabin, a 10.1-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a number of comfort features like vegan leather seating and heated front seats on higher trims. Its dimensions are only 3,990 mm long and 1,715 mm wide.

Stephen Collins, COO of BYD Australia, says that the BYD Atto 1 is important because it will make owning an electric vehicle possible for regular Australians. It’s going to change the entry-level EV market because it’s so cheap and has so many advanced features.

BYD Atto 2: A small SUV that can do a lot of things every day

The BYD Atto 2 compact SUV, along with the Atto 1, is made for drivers who want practicality without giving up style or performance. It has a 130kW single-motor setup and a 51.13 kWh Blade LFP battery, which gives it a good balance of comfort and efficiency. The Atto 2 comes in two trims: Essential and Premium. It is expected to be cheaper than the Atto 3, which starts at $39,990. This makes it an excellent option for Australians looking for a small SUV.

Sealion 5 and 8: SUVs that are good for families and adventurers

BYD’s Sealion 5 and Sealion 8 plug-in hybrid SUVs are made for families and people who want to live a certain way. The mid-size Sealion 5, like the Song Pro overseas, has a 1.5-litre gasoline engine and an electric motor that makes 120 kW and 210 Nm. It has two battery options and can go between 64 and 93 km on a single charge, making it great for daily commutes or weekend getaways.

The Sealion 8 is BYD’s biggest SUV in Australia. It’s a three-row plug-in hybrid made for families who want a lot of room, power, and the latest technology. It has seven seats, a high-tech interior, and a strong exterior presence. It competes directly with bigger SUVs like the Mazda CX-80, but it still focuses on clean energy efficiency, which is what BYD is known for.

A portfolio that is getting bigger and plans for the future

The Shark 6, Sealion 6 & 7, Dolphin, Seal, and BYD Atto 3 are some of the other models that will be added to BYD Australia’s lineup of ten vehicles. The premium Denza sub-brand will also come to Australia later in 2025. It will include plug-in hybrid AWD SUVs like the B5 and B8, which will add a luxury element to BYD’s local offerings.

BYD is clearly showing that it wants to take over Australia’s electric vehicle market by rolling out its cars quickly. The company wants to make affordable, stylish, and technologically advanced vehicles for every driver. BYD’s growing lineup promises Australians who wish to join the electric revolution a choice of models, capabilities, and long-lasting performance—all without sacrificing quality.
